Atlas Stone (or Atlas Shards) occur when harvesting metal from nodes. The Atlas Stone can not be gathered by the gauntlet tool, but must be picked up with "E". The Atlas Stone drops off if the node is destroyed by harvesting and therefore can drop into the void.
Atlas Stones are needed for crafting Atlas Cores, Atlas Core Upgrades, and Atlas Lifters. They are also consumed by the Atlas Pulse function of the Atlas Core which consumes one shard per activation.
